Distance of Sun and Earth in Hanuman Chalisa

Hanuman Chalisa is a Hindu devotional hymn addressed to Lord Hanuman. It has been authored by 16th-century poet Tulsidas in the Awadhi language. It mentions distance between the Sun and Earth. Two lines from this hymn computes this distance with great simplicity.

The line is-" जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू  " This means that sun (भानू) is at a distance of Juug Sahastra Yojans (जुग सहस्र जोजन - distance Unit in Hindi) According to the following conversion practices that are in use per Hindu Vedic literature:-

1 Juug= 12000

1 Sahastra=1000

1 Yojan= 8 miles

Thus 12000 X 1000 X 8 = 96,000,000 miles

1 mile = 1.6 Km

This further implies that distancing is 96,000,000 X 1.6 Kms = 153,600,000 Km.

Distance between Sun and Earth has been mentioned in the ancient hymn "Hanuman Chalisa". According to the modern astrology and science, we knew that earth's orbit around the sun is not circle and is slightly elliptical. Therefore, the distance between the earth and the sun varies throughout the year.

As its nearest point on the ellipse that is the earth's orbit around the sun, the earth is 91,445,000 miles(147,166,462 km) from the sun. This point is the earth's orbit is known as Periapsis(Perihelion) and it occurs around January 3.

Earth is farthest away from sun around July 3 when it is 94,555,000 miles(152,171,522 km) from the sun. This point in the earth's orbit is called Apoapsis(aphelion). The average distance of earth from sun is 92,955,807 miles(149,597,870.691 km).

Now we know the exact distance after so much development of science and technology but way back in 16th century the poet mentioned the approx. distance. This is the beauty and secret hidden in "Hanuman Chalisa"-one of devotional hymn of Hinduism.
